Azami Mido is one of first inmates of Deadman Wonderland that Ganta interacts with. She also becomes a part of the Forgeries.

Origin[]

Azami Mido was born in Japan and is a survivor of the Great Tokyo Earthquake. She suffered through the earthquake at the age of seven along with her parents. It wasn't long after that that Azami realized that her parents didn't care what happened to her. She found this out when she hurt herself during the Earthquake and cried, noticing how her parents had heard her but were deliberately neglecting her. It was after that she vowed to never cry again as she knew that she had to fend for herself. Azami also adopted the phrase 'I'm alright' to prove her independence to other people.

As she grew older, she became a delinquent and got involved in a motorcycle gang and donned a stereotypical outfit that went along with the gang. Her parents still did not care for her, showing their further neglect of her. Her life took a turn for the worse when her gang got into a brutal fight with another gang. Her friends could not live with what they did and panicked about going to prison. Azami declared that the two flee on a scooter as the police came, volunteering to take the blame for the deaths there. She cites she'll be alright as her friends apologize. However, no one comes to court to testify on her behalf and as a result, she is sentenced to be imprisoned in Deadman Wonderland.

Creation[]

Azami Mido was created by Jinsei Kataoka and Kazuma Kondou, who wrote and drew respectively, for Deadman Wonderland. She makes her first appearence in Chapter 2: Rule of Rule in the manga. She has yet to appear in the anime.

Character Evolution[]

In the beginning of the series, Azami shows a soft side as she is willing to help Ganta Igarashi adapt to life in Deadman Wonderland, going as far as to buy him a sandwich. She does show morals though as she stands up for what she believes in, even if she knows it will end up hurting her. However, she has a more reversed side that she doesn't show to many people. Inside, due to the neglect by her parents, she refuses help from anyone that offers it to her. She feels that people will betray her or will not stick to her in the end.

Despite this feeling, she knows that Ganta is the only person that has ever stood up for her and helped her, a memory she keeps during her life as a Forgery. When she fights with Ganta, she still holds her belief that she can do things by herself and needs no one to help her. She finds this to be wrong as Ganta is willing to sacrifice himself in order to help her. Azami admits for the first time that she needs someone to help her as she is caught in a machine threatening to tear her arm off. After Ganta saves her, she shows a much kinder side of herself as she works with Shiro to save Ganta and will protest Shiro when she is attacked.

Major Story Arcs[]

Welcome to Deadman Wonderland[]

Azami is first introduced during Ganta's second day in Deadman Wonderland. The two meet in the lunch line as Azami notices Ganta buying an awful food ration as opposed to something more substantial. She realizes he is new to the prison and offers to buy him a sandwich on the condition she has half. The two exchange pleasantries as Azami goes on to explain the idea of rules and Cast Points to Ganta. However, when she sees how weak Ganta is when Kazusama Kouzuma bullies him into mocking an older prisoner, she rescinds her offer and chastises him, stating he is just as low.

When the Dog Race is getting started, Kouzuma begins to bully the other contestants again to the point where he tries to take them out of the race. Azami objects to his nature but he knocks her down and breaks her arm. He instructs Ganta to do the same but Ganta sticks up for Azami as he storms off to win the race. Azami watches with content, figuring that he was a different person altogether. Not much is seen of Azami after that until Takami You and Shiro are trying to get below the prison to the mysterious G-Ward where Ganta and the other deadmen are being held. They run into Azami, who's arm is still in a sling from the incident with Kouzuma, as she tells them how to get there, knowing she has to pay back Ganta for his kindness.

Birth of the Forgeries[]

Azami isn't seen much after Ganta is shipped to the G-Ward and doesn't appear during the battle between the Undertakers and Scar Chain. However, Grand Chief Makina calls Azami into her office since during a stealth operation to Tamaki Tsunenaga's office, she notices Azami's name on a list of compatible blood types for some experiment. Azami doesn't think too much into it despite taking a locator watch in case Azami disappears. She and Ganta meet again as Ganta sticks up for Azami once more against a group of thugs. Soon after, she is called into the clinic by Rei Takashima to undergo treatment to be turned into an artificial deadmen called Forgeries.

With news of the Deadmen out to the public, Tamaki decides to show the world the true nature of the Deadmen by having one compete against a prisoner on death row. In reality, the Deadman was Azami, who was made into a Forgery with an altered mind to aimlessly kill with her new powers. Ganta sees this on the television, knowing it is Azami due to a band aid on her hand that he gave her when she was injured. Even though her memory is fuzzy and her abilities to control herself is altered due to the mask, she still remembers her troubled past and how Ganta was one of few people to show her kindness. She makes attempts to forget what she has gone through as she works as an enforcer for Tamaki of the Deadman, going so far as to fight them and Ganta when Tamaki instigates a fight between them to try and eradicate the deadmen. Ganta is able to devastate the arena as he saves Azami from his fellow deadmen.

Battle for Deadman Wonderland[]

Ganta goes on to infiltrate the area where Rei and Tamaki keep the Forgeries as he encounters Azami. He is able to pull off her mask as she uses her snake powers to attack him. Even though she survives, she loses her mask in a machine and attempts to get it back, still hooked on the drug it gives off and wanting to forget what she went through in life. Ganta comes back, trying to save her as her arm is threatened to be torn off. She claims to be okay but Ganta sees her crying, knowing she needs help despite her poisoning him with her powers. Azami allows him to save her as Rei and the G-Ward guards come. He hides her as he is taken to be tortured for Tamaki's pleasures and for science.

Azami encounters Senji, Chaplin, Minatsuki, and Idaki as they want revenge for what she did to them. Shiro comes to her defense, saying that Ganta believed in her and that he cares for all of them. She also reminds them that it was Tamaki that invoked their old scars and not her. They let the two go as they vow to save Ganta from the staff. As they get to where he is located, they save him from a group of Forgeries that wanted to put him in a mask. Afterwards, the forgeries and the staff begin to fight under the leadership of Makina and Kasuga Kyoko. They encounter a group that are Complete Forgeries as the Deadmen vow to take care of them as Ganta, Azami, and Shiro go after the transmitter that is controlling the Forgeries.

When they get to the transmitter, they encounter Shishito Madoka, a Complete Forgery as he is guarding the transmitter as he reveals that the transmitter was moved ages ago by Tamaki. He fights Ganta and Shiro, torturing them as Azami is paralyzed by Shishito's branch of sin. She witnesses the carnage that Shishito unleashes but is also stunned by how Shiro and Ganta are able to combine their forces to take down their sadistic captor. However, Shiro is wiped out from the battle as Ganta asks Azami to watch over her while he goes to aid Makina up above. While she does it though, Toto Sakigami arrives as the Mother Goose system goes offline, the Red Man persona taking over Shiro as she hones her power. During this time, Shiro kills Azami and beheads her. The last time Azami is seen in the series is when Ganta discovers Shiro's alternate personality and how she killed Azami.

Powers[]

Due to her altered genetics by Tamaki and Rei, Azami has artificial abilities as a Deadman, known as a Forgery. Like all the Forgeries, Azami has a branch of sin that allows her to manipulate her blood into a snake like creature. Her blood also contains a poison that is injected through a bite to the skin. This poison causes a person's skin to swell up from infection, bursting and brutally killing the person. Her powers are limited though due to the control that Rei is able to keep over her. When she breaks free of the mask's control, her power proves to be formidable with all the augmentations that have been put in her body.
